Intentional life

Jul 15, 2018

I went to the Magic Kingdom this morning and while I was there I shot several live videos to share examples of how Disney is intentional about things. It started with the parking lot, which is huge, where people often forget where they park. Disney labels each section with a character name and numbers each row. Cast members are there suggesting guests take a picture so that they remember where they parked, yet some still forget after a long day in the theme park.

Disney are intentional about how they park guests and keep a track of what rows fill up at what time. Therefore if you have forgotten where you parked all you need to do is seek out a parking lot cast member, tell them what time you arrived, and they will be able to pinpoint the area where you would have parked.

This is just one example of many ways that Disney are intentional with everything they do. How are you being intentional in your life, and if you are not currently doing so, what can you do to start today?

Your Subconscious mind

Jul 14, 2018

If you have been following me for a while you will know that I believe we all have an enormous amount of untapped potential locked away in our subconscious, or unconscious, mind. My mission is to help you release some of that potential so that you can grow into a life of fulfillment, freedom, and ultimately happiness.

Today I want to talk a little into the power of our subconscious mind and how it influences what happens on our lives. People talk about the universe delivering what you ask for and this is a similar concept. If you believe something will happen, it often does. You see, a thought which is repeatedly passed to your subconscious mind will be accepted by it and then translated into it's physical equivalent. There are some caveats to this: The thought needs to be backed with emotion and it needs to be consistently repeated before it will become reality.

This process works the same way for positive and negative thoughts and emotions so mastering this is crucial in order to...

Focusing questions

Jul 13, 2018

In my daily reading I learned a valuable lesson, one that I thought would be good to share with you. It is a simple concept and one that can be adopted easily to get excellent results.

You have probably heard me talk about getting started and taking action as Mark Twain says: "The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks and then starting on the first one".

This is not the simple concept, the secret is asking questions, not just any questions - focusing questions. I believe that the right question will provide the right answer so this is the art to getting started. How we phrase the focusing question to ourselves will determine value of the answer, and therefore the path our life will take.

"I bargained with life for a penny,

and life would pay no more.

However I begged at evening

when I counted my scanty store.

For life is a just employer,

He gives you what you ask,

but once...

Leadership responsibility

Jul 12, 2018

I was inspired this morning by words that came from Simon Sinek: Leadership is not a license to do less. Leadership is a responsibility to do more.

This may seem like an obvious statement but how many leaders have you seen in the past that coast once they get the "title" of leader? I have noticed it on many occasions and often wondered why this happens. I believe that it is from a sense of entitlement and maybe a lack of big ambition, what do you think?

I have never been one to rest on my laurels so I am always looking to move onward and upward, to become the best that I can be. I have a desire to help other people to grow and I believe that this has the knock-on effect of driving me to continue growing.

People do what people see so as a leader it is your responsibility to demonstrate the behavior and values that you expect from your team. As you reflect on your day think about this and ask yourself whether you demonstrated the right behavior and did your team follow you?

If you are...

Allow people to rise

Jul 11, 2018

Something that has been on my mind over recent times is how some companies, and Managers, restrict their employees progress and growth, has this happened to you?

I was reminded of this when I saw the following quote from Steve Jobs:

“It doesn’t make sense to hire smart people and then tell them what to do; we hire smart people so they can tell us what to do.”

What a refreshing approach, and when I say refreshing I mean great, not new, because Steve Jobs said this, and more importantly did it, years ago. Why do you think that the mindset to restrict progress still exists in companies?

I would be interested to hear your thoughts and comments?

Backhanded compliment

Jul 10, 2018

Have you ever noticed that some people cannot help themselves give a backhanded compliment instead of just leaving it at a well-deserved compliment? I have and I cannot understand why they do this, do you?

What do I mean by this? For example; I received one recently where the sender said "Good luck....I am surprised but only because I didn't think it was a necessary complication in a situation that was working". Why could it not have been left at good luck? Why the need to add the second part of the sentence? There is a time and a place for feedback, and we all need that for sure, but do not combine it with a compliment or a moment of gratitude as it only serves to diminish the sentiment.

My Dream

Jul 09, 2018

As I approached and passed the half way point in my life I started to think about what I had achieved so far and, more importantly, what lay ahead. I have to be honest and say that the picture was bleak. I had achieved a lot professionally and was regarded as successful in my career but my personal life was a disaster and my inner self felt empty.

What could I do about this? I knew that I still had a good chunk of time ahead of me (God willing) so what could I do to find fulfillment and satisfaction both personally and professionally in my second half?

I started by digging deep and identifying my purpose - my why. During this process it became obvious to me that there was a pattern where I enjoyed helping others to succeed. My Parent had both been teachers so I guess this was ingrained on me but as a teenager I was stubborn and wanted to follow my own path, and what a long and troubled path it turned out to be!

I have learned some good lessons on my journey and also collected some...

Happy Sunday

Jul 08, 2018

Today I just want to wish you a "Happy Sunday"

I was doing my Facebook live, Jake's journey, yesterday and Jake, who is 11 years old, was talking about motivation and hope. One of the things he said was to be nice to someone every day as it gives them hope. From the mouths of babes and all that.....

So in response to Jake's wisdom my blog for today is simple, thank you for reading and have a great day.

Boost with Baker

Jul 07, 2018

My mission is to add value to other people so that they can become the best version of themselves and as part of this process I introduce to you - "Boost with Baker"

I was inspired this morning by my mentor, John Maxwell, and his "Minute with Maxwell" post on growth. This made me think about the two quotes below, from Thomas Jefferson:

“Do you want to know who you are? Don't ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you.”

“If you want something you've never had, you must be willing to do something you've never done.”

Trial and Error

Jul 06, 2018

I have learned a lot by trial and error, and I continue to do so. When you stretch yourself you move out of your comfort zone. When you move out of your comfort zone you are trying things that you haven't done before and therefore the likelihood of making errors is higher. I understand now that this is the only way to continually grow.

I got to thinking about this today as I am starting a live webinar series and, to be honest, the technology (or more likely me) didn't work how I intended. The live event didn't happen as planned but I was able to record the webinar and post it immediately so all was not lost. In the past I would have been extremely frustrated and it would have bothered me for a long time. Now, I understand that when I push the boundaries things will not always go to plan.

Continue to push, make mistakes and learn as you go. It is the only way to achieve sustained success so keep going and know that you will NEVER be ready so just do it now!
